Code reference. Box fill is calculated under NEC 314.16. The volume allowance per conductor depends on the largest conductor in the box, not on each conductor individually. Every equipment grounding conductor in the box counts as a single allowance. Each device yoke counts as two allowances. Cable clamps count as one. Box volume must be the figure printed or marked on the box itself.

Why box fill matters more than it looks

A box that is overfilled has three problems. The conductors are compressed against each other and can abrade when the device is pushed back. Heat from terminations has less room to dissipate. And connections get strained when the device is folded in, which is a leading cause of loose neutrals and intermittent faults that are hard to find later.

The calculation is not about the physical emptiness of the box — a box can look half empty and still be overfilled by the code, because the allowance is based on wire volume plus allowances for hardware that also takes up space.

The volume per allowance is set by the largest conductor present: 2.00 cubic inches for 14 AWG, 2.25 for 12 AWG, 2.50 for 10 AWG, 3.00 for 8 AWG and 5.00 for 6 AWG.

Two worked examples

1. A single-gang box with one 12 AWG cable

One cable brings a hot, a neutral and a ground, feeding one receptacle. Current-carrying conductors: 2 (hot and neutral). Grounds: 1 allowance. Device: 2 allowances. Total 5 allowances at 2.25 cubic inches each, or 11.25 cubic inches. It is inside a 20.5 cubic inch plastic box by a wide margin. This is the standard case and it is why single-gang boxes are almost never a fill problem.

2. A junction box where two cables splice

Two 12 AWG cables enter a metal 4 inch square box, and each conductor is spliced through. That gives 4 current-carrying conductors (2 hots, 2 neutrals), 1 ground allowance, 1 clamp allowance, and no devices. Total 6 allowances at 2.25 cubic inches, or 13.5 cubic inches. A 2-1/8 inch deep 4 inch square box has 30.3 cubic inches, so it passes easily. Add a receptacle and two more cables and the picture changes quickly — that is where installers get caught.

FAQ

How do I calculate box fill?

Add up the number of allowances: one per current-carrying conductor, one in total for all equipment grounds, two per device yoke, and one for internal cable clamps. Multiply by the cubic-inch volume for the largest conductor present, then compare with the volume marked on the box.

How many allowances does a receptacle add?

Two allowances per yoke. A single receptacle, a duplex receptacle and a switch each count as one yoke and therefore two allowances. A two-gang box with two devices counts four allowances.

Do all the ground wires count individually?

No. All equipment grounding conductors in the box count as a single allowance, sized by the largest one present. This is one of the most commonly misunderstood rules in Article 314.16.

What is the volume allowance for 12 AWG wire?

2.25 cubic inches. The full set is 2.00 for 14 AWG, 2.25 for 12 AWG, 2.50 for 10 AWG, 3.00 for 8 AWG and 5.00 for 6 AWG. The allowance is set by the largest conductor in the box and applies to every allowance in that box.

How many cubic inches is a standard single-gang box?

A one-gang plastic residential box is typically 18 to 22 cubic inches. A metal 4 inch square box 1-1/2 inches deep is about 21 cubic inches, and 2-1/8 inches deep is about 30 cubic inches. Always read the marking on the box itself.

Do pigtails count toward box fill?

No. A short conductor that both starts and ends inside the box, such as a pigtail used to split a connection, is not counted. Only conductors that enter or leave the box are counted.

Does a cable clamp count?

One allowance for cable clamps inside the box. Metal boxes with internal clamps count one. Plastic boxes with integral external clamps generally do not, because the clamp is not a separate body inside the box.

What happens if a box is overfilled?

It is a code violation, and it causes real failures: abraded insulation, strained terminations, heat build-up around connections, and intermittent faults. An inspector can require the box to be replaced. Using a deeper box or a two-gang box is almost always cheaper than the rework.

Do I include the bare ground wire in the count?

Yes, as a physical body it must be accounted for, but it contributes one allowance in total regardless of how many grounding conductors there are. It is never counted per conductor.

Is box fill different for a ceiling fan box?

The box fill calculation is the same. What differs is the box listing: ceiling fan boxes must be listed and marked for fan support, which is a structural requirement under Article 314.27(C), separate from the volume calculation.
